Back to School Challenges with Pets- Avoid the Extra Stress with These Tips & Tricks!

Updated: Oct 23

As the seasons change, back to school brings a lot of change for the entire family, including dogs and cats!

It's a time of transition not only for children and parents but also for the furry members of the family! As the household routines and schedules shift with the start of the school year, pets may experience a range of adjustments as they navigate the new lifestyle.

Dogs may feel a sense of separation anxiety as their human family members are away for longer periods of time. They may begin to get bored, be destructive, hyperactive, or even a bit depressed or show other anxious behaviors.

To ensure that they still receive the attention, exercise, and mental stimulation they need to thrive during this time, be sure to consider them when scheduling activities, sports and events. Consider implementing some indoor enrichment activities, especially on busy or rainy/ snowy days.

Cats may also be affected by the changes in the household dynamics. They might exhibit behaviors such as increased vocalization, hiding, or even acting out in response to the disruption in their environment. Providing them with a safe space, engaging toys, and interactive playtime can help alleviate any stress they may be experiencing.

Incorporating a new back-to-school routine can be beneficial for both the animals and the family. Setting aside dedicated time for walks, play sessions, or simply cuddling can strengthen the bond between pets and their humans.

Additionally, involving children in the care and interaction with the pets can teach them responsibility and empathy, fostering a sense of teamwork within the family unit. Young children can help fill water bowls, give treats, and brush a pet. While older teens can play fetch with the dog outside and even take them for walks.

Back to School Tips for Pet Owners

Other tips:

  • Pick up backpacks and lunch boxes that your dog/ puppy may use as a chew toy.

  • Pencils can be enticing for pets to nibble on, be sure they aren't left on the floor.

  • Implement some natural calming remedies to help them ease through any stressful times.

  • If you're unable to provide daily play, walks, and care on certain days when your schedule gets busier, I recommend hiring a professional to provide In-Home Pet Care Services!

*I offer in-home pet care service in select areas of Minnesota!

Overall, recognizing and addressing the impact of back-to-school changes on pets is essential in ensuring their well-being and happiness. By being mindful of their needs and providing them with love and support during this period of adjustment, the entire family, including dogs and cats, can navigate the back-to-school season smoothly and harmoniously.
